Not enough published schedules yet

These 7 states have fewer than 3 distinct per-ton schedules in our listings, so no state median is reported. Their schedules are in the national figure.

Minimum charges and flat fees

100 distinct schedules (125 facilities) state a minimum charge for an ordinary trash load. The median minimum is $16.65. Posted minimums run from $3 to $92. A small load pays the minimum when its weight times the per-ton rate comes to less.

156 facilities (119 schedules) post fees but no per-ton trash rate: flat per-vehicle or per-load prices, per-yard or per-bag prices, or rates for specific materials only. They are not in the per-ton figures.

What it costs to dump a typical load

A full-size pickup bed holds about 2 cubic yards level and 3 heaped (our geometry, not a source). EPA's conversion factor for mixed household trash, uncompacted, is 250-300 lb per cubic yard (EPA, April 2016). Gate fee = tons × the posted per-ton rate.

Gate fees for one and two pickup loads of household trash at the national and state medians
Load Weight (EPA) At national median ($60.97) At Ohio median ($45.75) At New York median ($110.30)
1 pickup load 2-3 cu yd 500-900 lb $15-$27 $11-$21 $28-$50
2 pickup loads 4-6 cu yd 1,000-1,800 lb $30-$55 $23-$41 $55-$99

These are gate fees only; where a facility's minimum (median $16.65) is higher, the minimum applies. Item surcharges (mattresses, tires, appliances) and out-of-county rates are extra. Run your own load in the dumpster vs haul-it-yourself calculator.

Methodology

  • Sources. Each figure comes from a facility's own posted fee schedule, or the county schedule that covers it. The fee text is copied verbatim onto the listing with the source URL and fetch date, and the quote is checked against the fetched page before it is published.
  • What counts. Only a per-ton rate for ordinary trash: MSW, refuse, garbage or household waste. Where a schedule lists several, the first rate for ordinary trash is used.
  • What is excluded, and why. Special waste, asbestos, tires, yard waste, concrete and other single materials have their own prices. Construction-only rates, out-of-county and non-resident rates, uncovered-load charges and surcharges apply to some loads only. Flat per-vehicle, per-yard and per-bag prices cannot be converted to a per-ton figure without guessing the weight. Including any of these would mix unlike prices.
  • One schedule, one data point. Many counties post one price sheet for all their sites. A schedule shared by several facilities counts once in a median, so a county with ten sites does not count ten times. The facility count shows how many listings use the schedules.
  • State threshold. A state median is reported only with at least 3 distinct schedules.
  • Limitations. Coverage is uneven by state: 203 facilities of the 4,848 published listings have a posted per-ton trash rate. WM and other private operators often do not publish prices, so privately run landfills are under-represented. The figures describe posted fees in this sample, not every facility in the country.
  • Updates. The figures are recomputed from the listing data every time the site is rebuilt. New fee schedules are added in weekly batches. The as-of date is the latest date a fee in the sample was checked against its source.
